Emerald City® Tulip Poplar is a refined selection of the eastern native tulip tree. Compared with seedling tulip poplars, it grows straighter, holds a stronger central leader, and stays more compact—about 55 feet tall by 25 feet wide—with deeper green, slightly glossy leaves.
In late spring to early summer, mature trees produce yellow to greenish-yellow tulip-shaped flowers with an orange center. Summer foliage is dense and dark. Fall color is a clear, bright yellow. The furrowed gray bark adds winter structure.
This cultivar is a strong choice when you want the speed and presence of tulip poplar without the irregular branching common in seed-grown trees. It works as a specimen, shade tree, or street tree where overhead wires are not a concern.
