Description
The Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) is a deciduous shade tree that adds dramatic foliage, unique flowers, and seasonal interest to any landscape. Reaching 30-60 feet tall, it develops a rounded canopy with broad, heart-shaped green leaves that provide dense shade in summer.
In late spring to early summer, the tree bursts into bloom with clusters of large, fragrant white flowers, adorned with purple and yellow markings. These striking flowers attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Following the blooms, the tree produces long, bean-like seed pods, which persist through winter, adding textural interest.
A hardy and adaptable species, Southern Catalpa thrives in varied soil conditions, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It tolerates drought, urban pollution, and occasional flooding, making it a low-maintenance tree for streetscapes, yards, and naturalized plantings. With its unique appearance and strong resilience, it is an excellent ornamental tree for shade and pollinator gardens.
