Description

American Beech (Fagus grandifolia): A Majestic Native with Silvery Bark and Persistent Fall Color

American Beech is one of the most stately and long-lived deciduous trees in eastern North America. It is a true forest aristocrat—slow-growing, shade-tolerant, and capable of living two to three hundred years. In the open it develops a broad, spreading crown with low horizontal branches that often touch the ground.

It reaches about 50–80 feet tall and 40–80 feet wide, matching your listing size of 70 × 50. The trunk is short and massive, covered in thin, smooth, silver-gray bark that stays smooth even on old trees—making it a favorite for carving initials, though that scars the tree for life. The leaves are simple, alternate, and glossy dark green with prominent parallel veins. In fall they turn a rich golden bronze, then often persist on the branches through much of winter, adding quiet structure when most trees are bare.

The fruit is a small, edible three-sided nut enclosed in a prickly husk—beechnuts—that feeds wildlife. Flowers are inconspicuous. This is a legacy tree for large landscapes, not a quick shade solution. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does not tolerate compaction, salt, or urban stress well, so site it carefully.
